The Middle Ages marked a time that experienced one of the most violent periods in history. However, it was also the period of the building of the first castles in England in the year 1066 A.D. The castles unfortunately were given little appreciation due to the violence.
The Norman Castles were built to house men, horses, and everyday necessities. As well as provide a ground where the Normans could govern the surrounding area. The Normans were a gathering of builders who were invited by King Edward the Confessor. They were a group who liked the idea that their castle would serve as battle fort or a power base. In 1066 A.D., King William I of England defeated King Harold at the Battle of the Hastings. Thereafter, the building of the first Norman Castles began.
